Hudson Lake — Work still to be done

Hi all,

Hopefully, you all received our drain update - all cleaned, serviced, and completely closed! The ditch is dry.

With regard to the drain, there is still much to do.

Though we were able to secure drainage board support and DNR permission to service the drain, we did not:

  • reach an interim agreement between the drainage board and DNR to keep the drain closed so the water level can rise at minimally the legal high level to help sustain us through the hot and dry summers. The plan is to ask for a motion to allow the HLCA to manage the drain point forward until a firm legal agreement is put in place between the DNR and the HLCA.

  • get commitments in funding to buy the water level measuring equipment, etc. Though donations were made the night of our meeting, we need around $1300 in total. We would like to purchase the equipment ASAP. Please feel free to send donations to HLCA - earmarked for this purpose via check or on the website via donate button.

  • Website is http://www.hudsonlakeindiana.com/Follow website donation with an email to Tom Ahart - Lakedata@hotmail.com to earmark it for the equipment or mailed donations should be payable to:

  • build and execute the short-and mid-term model for maintaining and managing the drain

    • confirm ongoing team and schedule for valve maintenance

    • teams to do scheduled monitoring and reporting on the drain and ditch for safety and vandalism (ditch gate down, ditch dry, etc.)

    • a team to monitor Lakeshore Drive - it's open/closed; need of grading/stone; lake level issues

    • consider ongoing needs - sources, format, and storage of - tracking and recording weather; tracking and recording lake levels (pre and post-equipment purchase); tracking and recording incidents related to lake levels; tracking and recording drain maintenance and monitoring; tracking and recording LSD; etc. (this data will be key in changing the legal level of the lake and managing the drain)

    • how do we make the last point part of official records?

    • research and consider other equipment or expenses - as open water flow measuring equipment for the ditch, Safety features on the equipment, and drain? Locks? Cameras? Alarms?

    • other?

  • someone to host Zoom meetings and/or offer tech talent for the above.

It was with everyone pulling their talents, time, and planning together that we moved so quickly to service the drain. The desire is to call another meeting to work on the above items. Once we have a work plan and tasks for people to sign-up for, we can start rolling.

If you are interested in attending a brainstorming meeting, please let me know the following:

Are you free to do a Monday evening in person (10/10 or 10/24)?

What's the best way to share details of time, place etc.?

If I have a volunteer to host Zoom, that may be an option for participating.

Is anyone willing to be a scribe-notetaker?

Thanks for all your support!
